There are six key skills which help children to improve their learning and performance in education, work and life.
• Communication
• Application of numbers
• Information Technology
• Working with others
• Improving own learning and performance
• Problem solving
These are embedded in the National Curriculum. We also actively promote children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Children are taught mainly by their class teacher; sometimes as a whole class or occasionally in groups or indivually according to what work the child is doing. Some of the work the children do each term will be part of a topic. Many of the foundation subjects are taught using such an approach.
Offsite Visits
Our topics often involve visits and in Year 5 and 6 there are residential visits. In Year 5 we hope to use Stubbington Study Centre and in Year 6 to take children to the Isle of Wight. Visits play a vital part in your child's work at school.
Homework
Homework has the potential to raise standards, extend learning opportunities and develop positive attitudes. The expectation is that all children undertake the following homework tasks:
Children should be encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes, five times a week.
Each week a short task will be set to help the children develop their spelling, vocabulary, grammar or style of writing.
As the children progress through the school the type and quantity of homework will reflect their maturity and ability. In Year 6 the children will have a more intensive homework programme. This will enable them to prepare for the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) and secondary school.
Extra-curricular Clubs
We offer a wide range of extra-curricular clubs at the school. Some clubs are run by staff, parents and governors who give up their own time to the benefit of the children.
Music lessons for brass, piano, violin and woodwind are subsidised.
If your child is interested in taking up music lessons please contact the school for more information. |
